In 1991, I began learning a planned language called Esperanto. I wanted to find out just how long it would take me to learn it and what kind of experience I would have with it. I acquired conversational fluency in a few months and joined the Esperanto League for North America around the beginning of 1992. The adventure began in 1985 in what must seem like an unlikely place. One day in junior high English class, the set of grammatically incorrect sentences the entire class was to correct dealt with Esperanto. According to the lesson, someone a long time ago went to the trouble of creating a streamlined language that would be easy to learn. He had studied the features of European languages and knew what his new language would have to be like to succeed as an international tongue. The lesson didn't say what ever happened to Esperanto but it did intrigue me. |
